Making Changes that Last/ Starting Over Bible Verses

Ecclesiastics 3:1-8 tells us that there is a season for everything, and I believe that means there comes a time when we all need a fresh start.

And guess what? If you’re in that season right now, you’re in the perfect place, because today we’re answering the important question: What does the Bible Say About New Beginnings?

The ability to start over is our inheritance from God, a gift that we have all been given. ( Ezekiel 36:26) When we dedicate our hearts to Christ, it kickstarts a brand new journey for us, one filled with different seasons. Some seasons are delightful and beautiful, while others can be quite challenging, but each season brings valuable lessons.

So, what do we do when it’s time to transition from the old to the new? Simple – we put our trust in God to do what only He can do. We allow Him to guide us confidently into the new chapter of our lives.

Now, we all know that setting New Year’s resolutions can be a bit tricky – mostly because a whopping 90% of them fail. If God has promised to make us new, then why do we still struggle with the same old challenges? Well, it’s because we often lack a proper understanding of what it truly means to start over.

Clean slates are normally misunderstood and just erasing the past. Making a snap decision to simply bury what was. But this mindset sets us all up for failure.

New Beginnings Defined

New Beginnings, is a God given ability to take a step in a new direction.

Starting over isn’t just about leaving the past behind; it’s about embracing a whole new direction. It’s a journey, not a quick fix. While our salvation in Christ happens in an instant, living for Him is a process that unfolds gradually over time.

Now, before we dive deeper into this topic, there are a couple of important things you should know. Think of them as speed bumps that might slow you down or even derail your progress if you’re not aware of them.

2 Fresh Start Theifs

1. Old Mindsets

When a new season begins, it’s easy to wake up and still think like the old person we used to be. But if we keep doing that for too long, the new season will end up resembling the old one.

Jesus even talked about this in a parable, using the example of old wineskins. (Luke 5:37-39)

Just like old wineskins couldn’t be refilled without breaking, we need a new mindset to fully embrace the capacity that God has given us with each new season.

As believers we cannot keep falling into the same old patterns, we must renew our mind. (Ephesians 4:22-24) That is just one huge reason why we need God’s word. The Bible, like a manual is filled with instructions on how to navigate these new beginnings. It teaches us the skills we need for each season, reminding us that with God, anything is possible.

Speaking of possibilities, that leads to fresh start their #2:

2. Old Habits.

Did you know that about 40% of everything we do is driven by habit? So, every fresh start brings new possibilities, but it’s still up to us to make new choices.

Here’s the secret: habits can’t just be erased; they must be replaced. Whether it’s the end of a toxic relationship or the beginning of a new financial journey, we need new behaviors.

This is where prayer and listening for God’s voice become incredibly vital. Just as the Psalmist asked God to search his heart, Psalm 139:23-24 we need to do the same.

We need God’s wisdom to lead us. If we seek it, He will provide. (James 1:5) But let’s not rush this process. Waiting on the Lord means slowing down long enough to listen to His voice.

The Secret Sauce of Lasting Change

Now, let’s talk about something exciting – your new name!

In this new life, whatever burdens you carried before no longer define you. You have been given a fresh start, a new name.

Renaming is a concept that appears throughout the Bible.

  • Abram became Abraham, Genesis 17
  • Sarai became Sarah, Genesis 17
  • Jacob became Israel, Genesis 32

Just to name a few.

Each new season unleashes a new part of who God created you to be. Sure, the old habits and mindsets may come knocking, but you can confidently say, “Sorry, that person no longer lives here!”

Negativity, hopelessness, shame – they no longer reside in your life. It’s time to fully embrace the person God has called you to be in this season. Step into it with boldness, knowing that you are never taking a single step alone.

And now, let’s explore some powerful New Beginnings Bible verses together.
